category donegal | miscellaneous | press release author Monday August 16, 2010 16:38author by Séamus Macauthor email restorepoliticalstatus at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

The Annual Hunger Strike Commemoration will take place in Bundoran, Donegal on Saturday 28th August 2010. Leaving the towns East End at 3pm. The Republican gathering commemorates all Irish Republican soldiers who have given their lives in pursuit of the 32 County Republic.

On Saturday 28th August Republican’s from across Ireland and abroad will be arriving in Bundoran in county Donegal to participate in the annual Hunger Strike Commemoration. The Commemoration which has been held for nearly 30 years has gathered in momentum over the years with expected numbers to be between 1500 and 2000 people.

One of the organisers, Brendan Casey, commented, “this event is now one of the major events in the Republican calendar and we would have noticed significant increases in numbers, particularly over the past few years, we are anticipating numbers to increase this year as more people again align with traditional Republicanism. This Commemoration remembers all Irish Republicans who have died on Hunger Strike”.

The march which is organised by the Hunger Strike Commemoration Committee attracts several fife and drum bands from around the country and abroad, while relatives of Hunger Strikers and families of those presently in prison will be leading the march from Bundoran’s East End to the Republican Garden of Remembrance.

Casey, added, “we consider it to be crucially important that all those who gave their lives in pursuit of Ireland’s struggle for freedom are remembered with pride and dignity. It is vital that we remember also that the cause for which they died remains unattained, Ireland remains partitioned with a British administration in Stormont.

Casey also emphasised that everyone was welcome to attend this Commemoration, “everyone should attend this Commemoration to pay honour to the brave Irish men who gave their lives for the 32 County Republic”.

The Bundoran Hunger Strike Commemoration starts at 3pm and will go through the town to the Republican Garden of Remembrance.
